While camping on the West Coast of South Africa, we came across a labyrinth. I decided to walk it slowly, aiming for the centre. At first, the path seemed to bring me closer and closer to my goal, and I thought I’d reach it quickly. But suddenly, the path turned, winding out toward the edge. The further I walked, the further away the centre seemed until I found myself on the outermost edge. Just when it felt endless, the path made a final turn, cutting across all the layers, and I arrived at the end. It struck me that life is like this. Goals seem near, then far, and we’re tempted to give up. Yet, when they seem furthest, we may be closer than we think. This is also true of the ultimate goal: the return of Jesus. We are warned that in the last days, scoffers will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation” (2 Peter 3:3-4). But suddenly, in one final turn, Jesus will return. “It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown” (1 Corinthians 15:52). Our Lord’s return may be closer than we imagine. So, “live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God” (2 Peter 3:12).
