On my run this weekend, I faced rain and howling winds. The wind taught me a valuable lesson about direction and grace. Running against the wind is a struggle, expending extra energy to maintain pace. Running with the wind, however, feels lighter and stronger. I noticed that when the wind is behind me, it feels gentler and less obvious than when I am running against it, even on the same day. I often forget the wind is blowing until I turn around and get smacked by the same wind that felt like a gentle breeze moments ago. The lesson is the contrast between doing things by our strength or by His grace. When we align ourselves with God, we are carried by His grace, like running with the wind at our backs. Yet, we sometimes think we are doing it all on our own, forgetting God’s grace behind. We change direction, trying to race by our own effort and face the world head-on. Then we realise how powerful the effect of His breeze actually was. Let us strive to live by His grace, not our own effort: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8).
