Why did this happen? Who is to blame? These are the most asked and unanswered questions. Whether it be a small thing like a dented car or a major event like loss or illness, we want to know why it happened and who is to blame. While getting an answer won’t change anything, we still want these answers, and often there is no answer. Jesus and his disciples came across a man who was blind from birth. “Rabbi,” his disciples asked him, “why was this man born blind? Who sinned, this man or his parents?” (John 9:2). Jesus totally changes the question and our perspective. Jesus said, “You’re asking the wrong question. You’re looking for someone to blame. There is no such cause-effect here. Look instead for what God can do” (John 9:3 MSG). Or as another version puts it – “This happened so the power of God could be seen in him.” Jesus changes the perspective from the reason to the purpose, from blame to opportunity, from looking back to looking forward.
