I was recently meditating on a selection of verses in Psalm 119. It's one of the longest chapters in the Bible. One of the most popular verses of Psalm 119 is Psalm 119:105 "Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path." But reading Psalm 119:33-40 it struck me how it is not merely reading God's word that is important, but about allowing God to actively work in my life and transform my heart. The psalmist does not simply ask to know God's ways through His word; he asks, "Teach me," "Give me understanding," "Make me walk," "Turn my eyes," and "Renew my life." He recognises that obedience begins with God's work within him. Verse 37 particularly challenges me: "Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word." Every day I choose where I will fix my gaze. If my eyes are consumed by temporary worthless things, my heart soon follows. But when my eyes are fixed on God, His Word and active presence breathes fresh life into me. Today my prayer is simple: Lord, teach me, shape me, and renew me. Turn my heart from everything that steals my affection for You, and lead me to walk faithfully with You until the very end. Amen. (Nicky B).
