"We wouldn't last long in the bush," I say to my wife as we drive through Kruger National Park. "Everything is against you. Every bush is full of sharp thorns. There are animals on land, water and even in the trees wanting to kill you. It's really a hostile environment." Safe in the car, I know that out in the wilds without equipment or an experienced guide, survival would be nearly impossible. Life is much like a walk through a game reserve – debt, crime, illness, fear, tragedy. The predators are endless, and we often feel totally unequipped to face them. Our only chance of making it safely through is to have help. God offers us a guidebook to identify dangers and navigate our path: "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." (Psalms 119:105). But more than this, he gives us a guide to go with us. "The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail." (Isaiah 58:11). Jesus is our guide. He knows the way, helps us deal with life's painful thorns, and refreshes us on the journey. Whatever you are facing, there is only one way through – fix your eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. (Hebrews 12:2). (Craig B).
