While travelling in Italy I watched with fascination as a mother spoke in Italian to her small child. To me it was meaningless noise, but the child clearly understood. It made me ponder our relationship with God. Even if we are young in faith, we can still hear and understand His voice. But for those who don’t know God, His voice seems foreign. When Jesus spoke to Saul, he understood—but those with him “saw the light but didn’t understand the voice speaking” (Acts 22:9). This is often our experience too. Others might mock our faith or think we’re hearing things. But that’s because they don’t yet know the voice. “The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit” (1 Corinthians 2:14). Don’t be discouraged. If you are God’s child, His Spirit is in you, and His voice will always find your heart. To others, it may just be noise—but to us, it is life.
