Some have called Nehemiah the second shortest man in the Bible (knee-high Miah 🤣), but while that’s a joke, he does pray the shortest (unrecorded) prayer. The Jewish people are in captivity in Assyria (Iran). Nehemiah is a butler to the king, a job that requires his absolute best. Just looking sad could mean death. One day he is depressed after hearing about how bad conditions are in Jerusalem, and the king notices! “Why the long face? You’re not sick are you? Or are you depressed?”(Nehemiah 2:2). In real danger, he explains that his home city, Jerusalem, has been burnt to cinders. The king’s next words could be his death sentence. The king says, “What is it you want?” Is this a sarcastic question or a question of concern? Either way, there’s no going back now. “Then I prayed to the God of heaven, and I answered the king…” (Nehemiah 2:4-5). In a breath of time, Nehemiah prays and then makes an audacious request to the king for finance to rebuild the city. His prayer and his answer weave together. His breath and his connection with God are one. Let your prayer be instant and always.
