Let go!

Let go!

There’s a story of a man who slips off a cliff but manages to grab onto a small tree growing on the side. Hanging there, he realises he cannot get back up. In desperation he cries to God, “Lord, please save me!” A voice replies, “Do you truly believe I can save you?” He answers, “Yes, I do!” And then God says, “I will save you. Let go.” For most of us, this would be a test of faith too far. We trust God, but to trust when we cannot see how He can save us, without any safety net, that is difficult. A rich young man met Jesus and asked him what he should do to be saved. Jesus said, “sell everything”. However, that was too much to let go of, and “he went away sad” (Matthew 19:21). On another occasion, Jesus, watching people make donations at the temple, sees “a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.” He says, “This poor widow has…put in everything – all she had to live on.” (Mark 12:41-44). This is letting go. This is ultimate trust. We all struggle to truly let go of the flimsy branch we cling to. But to fully experience God’s saving grace, we must let go and let God.
