Thankful

Thankful

“Wow”, we gush, looking in awe as the tap turns and water comes out. “That’s awesome”. For most of us, this would hardly be considered noteworthy. This was true for us until a devastating flood, in a somewhat ironic twist, caused us to have water everywhere but nowhere. With pipes destroyed by the flood, it was days before water would be restored. Suddenly, the most basic things were challenging – cooking, washing, flushing, bathing. Yet this is the situation many in the world permanently live in while we take water and power for granted. It’s easy not to be thankful for these essential utilities and complain when the water pressure is low, or the power is temporarily disrupted. Yet when we lose something essential, we quickly appreciate it when it returns. Surely, our constant attitude should be one of thanks and gratefulness, not complaint and discontent. We should not need loss to make us appreciate the many things God has given us. Today, look at what you have, and “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
