Science tells us there are four things essential for life: water, air, food, and light. Take them away, and life cannot continue. Interestingly, Jesus uses these necessities of physical life to show us what we need for spiritual life. We need water, and Jesus said: "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink." (John 7:37). We need air, the breath that fills us and keeps us alive. After his resurrection, Jesus breathed on his disciples and said: "Receive the Holy Spirit." (John 20:22). We need food, and Jesus said: "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry." (John 6:35). We need light, and Jesus said: "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (John 8:12). Water. Air. Food. Light. Without them, physical life cannot survive. However, these necessities of life are pointing us towards something greater. We can have everything our bodies need to survive and still be missing the life God created us to have. Jesus said: "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." (John 10:10). Science tells us what we need to survive. And in the end, science was right. We need Jesus to live…eternally.
