Warthogs

Warthogs

There are many animals that people are excited to see in game reserves. However, one that is not usually high up on the to-see list is the warthog. These beauty-challenged pig-like animals with their wart protrusions are often ignored as people seek out lions, leopards, elephants and other greater beasts. However, watching them on a recent trip through southern Africa, I was struck by their interesting approach to eating. To eat, a warthog needs to kneel. This is because they have short necks and relativity long front legs. However, while their physical form requires them to kneel to eat, kneeling also allows them to remain stable while staying low to the ground and watching for potential predators. So while warthogs look funny kneeling to eat, this seeming limitation also benefits them. There is an important lesson to be learned from the humble warthog in our own lives. We may want to see ourselves as the mighty lion or regal leopard, but as Paul tells us, this is not who God calls. “Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth” (1 Corinthians 1:26). Rather, we need to be humble, like the warthog – “Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker” (Psalm 95:6). It’s when we approach God in humility that we will remain stable and He will make us aware of the dangers that seek to ensnare us.
