Nothing But Faith

We often complicate salvation, claiming people must understand every doctrine, hold the correct interpretation of Scripture, and faithfully observe certain religious practices in order to be saved. Yet the cross tells a very different story. A dying criminal, guilty by his own confession, simply turned to Jesus and said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." Jesus immediately replied, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise." (Luke 23:42-43) No opportunity remained for correct scriptural understanding, good works, or religious achievement. He came with nothing but faith in the One hanging beside him. Paul echoes this same glorious truth: "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved… 'Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.'… 'The same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him.'" (Romans 10:9,11-12) The invitation of the gospel has never changed. People do not first need religion; they need Jesus. Through Him alone we are reconciled to our Heavenly Father, receive forgiveness, and are welcomed into His family. Our calling is not to place obstacles in the way of faith, but to point others to Christ, trusting His promise that everyone who calls on Him in faith will be saved. (Nicky B).
