During lockdown, we volunteered at a community garden close to where we stay. One of our first tasks was to plant runner peas. The seeds were absolutely tiny. It was hard to believe these small seeds would grow into peas. We were so proud to see our harvest of delicious fresh peas after a few weeks. If, however, our pea seeds had grown into poisonous fruit, we would have been shocked. Just as we know, whatever seeds we plant, we will harvest, so it is with our natural life. In Galatians 6:8, we read, “For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.” If we devote our time and attention to satisfying our fleshly desires – the love of money, fame, success, worldly pleasures – we will reap corruption. But if we devote our attention to seeking and serving God in prayer, reading of scripture and in our daily living, we will reap everlasting life. “You need to put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:22-24).
