We have a friend who, after falling and hitting her head, not only lost hearing in one ear, she also lost her smell and taste. All food and drink now has no taste, which makes eating only for survival, not enjoyment. I experienced a little of this when COVID caused me to lose smell and some taste. Food lost most of its appeal. We ate because we had to. Yet eating is so much more. We eat for sustenance, but also for enjoyment and connection. And so when it comes to the bread of life, God’s Word, have we lost our taste? For many Christians, God’s Word can become something we read because we think we have to, to stay spiritually alive. But this is not what God gave it to us for. He has set us a feast, delicious and full of flavour. As Jeremiah put it, “When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, LORD God Almighty” (Jeremiah 15:16). God invites you not just to get sustenance from His Word, but to enjoy it as your greatest daily feast. “Taste and see that the LORD is good” (Psalms 34:8). How does God’s Word taste to you?
