In 597 BC, hope seemed lost. Israel was being taken into captivity in Babylon for 70 years. Yet despite their sin, God still loved them and gave this promise: “This is what the LORD says: ‘You will be in Babylon for seventy years. But then I will come and do for you all the good things I have promised, and I will bring you home again. For I know the plans I have for you,’ says the LORD. ‘They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope’” (Jeremiah 29:10-11). God kept His promise through Daniel and his three friends: “God gave these four young men an unusual aptitude for understanding every aspect of literature and wisdom. And God gave Daniel the special ability to interpret the meanings of visions and dreams” (Daniel 1:17). Daniel served until King Cyrus, who let the Jews return home. “Then the king appointed Daniel… ruler over the whole province of Babylon… At Daniel’s request, the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego…” (Daniel 2:48-49). God moved kingdoms to care for a nation that had rejected Him. Just imagine what He will do for those today who choose Him as their Heavenly Father.
