Your Why Changes Everything

We spend years learning what – what happened, what is true, what we should believe – then much of adulthood working out how. How should I live? How should I respond? But there is a deeper question: Why? Why do you follow Jesus? Because you were taught to? Because you're afraid not to? Because you want eternal life? Those reasons may begin the journey, but Scripture points toward something deeper – love. When Jesus was asked for the greatest commandment, his answer wasn't about what you know or how religiously you behave: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." (Matthew 22:37) Our why must eventually become love. But beneath even the why is a deeper question: Who? Christianity doesn't begin with discovering your purpose – it begins with discovering a Person. "God is love." (1 John 4:8) When God becomes our Who, love becomes our Why. And when love becomes our why, it reshapes our what and our how. Jesus said people would recognise his disciples by one unmistakable characteristic: "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John 13:35) So don't just ask, "What am I doing for God?" Ask the harder question: Why am I doing it, and Who is at the centre of it all? (Craig B).
