What is a bird?

What do you think of when I say, “Picture a bird in motion”? You’re probably thinking of a bird soaring through the sky. However, isn’t it strange how not all birds can fly? We recently stayed at a place, and a flock of about ten ostriches ran past our house. Ostriches are the biggest birds in the world, yet they can’t fly. But does flight define a bird? The same goes for us. What defines us as children of God? Is it the clothes we wear, the fact that we read the Bible, or that we go to church on a Sunday? Our identity in Christ isn’t defined by our outward appearance but rather by what’s in our hearts. In Proverbs 4:23, we read – “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” Our heart defines our actions and, ultimately, who we are. So what should be in our hearts? What should be the defining characteristic of a child of God? “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35). It’s God’s divine love that defines a child of God. Open your heart to receive God’s ultimate gift of love, and let this be your identity.
