Our 18-month grandson was running around loving life – all smiles and chatty. But as the day wore on and he grew tired, he started to complain, then cry, becoming inconsolable. No logic could calm him. There was only one thing he needed: sleep. After a nap he awoke rested and was back to his perky, fun self. His behavior mirrors what we all experience. There are times when we are full of energy and joy, but as life's toils wear us down we become weary and irritable, snapping at people, feeling aggrieved. The world seems unfair and nothing can console us. There is only one thing that will work – rest. Yet unlike a baby, it's not sleep that solves the tiredness of soul. Some turn to medication or counseling, others to sports or distraction. But without God "there is no true peace" (Isaiah 48:22). There is only one place we can find real rest: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28). Jesus is the only one who can truly give us the rest we need – a rest that, despite what is happening in our life, brings a peace beyond understanding (Philippians 4:7). If today the world makes no sense and everything looks against you, don't try harder – try Jesus, and find rest that truly restores. (Craig B).
