Stop Trying, Start Surrendering

Romans 7 and 8 reveal a profound truth: we can live under the rule of the flesh, or under the rule of the Spirit. Paul captures the frustration of striving in human strength: "For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out." (Romans 7:18) Even Paul, a devout Pharisee, found that knowing God's law was not enough to set him free – his sinful nature kept pulling him the other way. In desperation he cries, "What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me?" (Romans 7:24). Then comes the life-changing answer: "Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!" (Romans 7:25) Jesus did not come to give us better rules, He came to set us free. John the Baptist declared, "I baptize you with water… but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit" (Mark 1:8). This is the miracle of the new birth: we are not called to improve the old life but to receive an entirely new one through the Spirit. As Romans 8:6 promises, "The mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace." We face a choice – keep striving in our own strength, or surrender to Christ and let His Spirit lead us. Freedom begins the moment we stop trying to live the Christian life ourselves and allow Christ to live His life through us. (Nicky B).
