Why do things go wrong in life? When one issue after another arises, we can find it difficult. In the story of Joseph, as a young boy, his brothers sell him as a slave. He serves a master who likes him, only to have his master’s wife lie about him, so he’s thrown in prison. Here, he languishes until he interprets dreams for two of pharaoh’s servants also in the prison. They promise to get him out but forget until years later. It’s a long and unjust suffering. Why? The Psalmist reveals the answer. “Then God sent someone to Egypt ahead of them— Joseph, who was sold as a slave. They bruised his feet with fetters and placed his neck in an iron collar. Until the time came to fulfil his dreams, the LORD tested Joseph’s character.” (Psalms 105:17-19). While God planned to use Joseph to save his family from a severe famine by becoming second in command in Egypt, his suffering was for the testing of his character. We are all called to develop God’s character – mercy, grace, patience, kindness, and truth (Exodus 34:6-7). These divine characteristics are often forged in our trials.
