Juicy gossip

“Did you hear what Susie did at Tom’s party?” It’s enough to get everyone to stop talking and lean in to listen. What is it about gossip that we are drawn to it like flies to dung? One of the most binge-watched series on Netflix was Gossip girls. Gossip may be as sweet as honey to the tongue as we eat it, but it will make our stomachs bitter. God knows we all sin. This is why, in love, he gave His only son to die, so we might receive His underserved grace and forgiveness. “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). This is why it is so important for us to listen to God’s love instruction – “He who covers a transgression seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates friends” (Proverbs 17:9). When we cover people’s faults as God covered ours, we are seeking love. When we choose not to gossip, we live a life of love and forgiveness. But when we repeat others’ faults, not only do we separate close friendships, but we separate ourselves from living a life that reflects who God is. God calls us to be image-bearers of His love and forgiveness to the world. Let’s fill each day of our lives with words filled with grace and kindness, for “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones” (Proverbs 16:24).
