Planted with purpose

Planted with purpose

In Psalm 92, the righteous are beautifully compared to trees: “The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the LORD; they flourish in the courts of our God. They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green” (Psalm 92:12-14). These “righteous trees” thrive, bearing fruit even in old age, always green and full of life. But how can a tree flourish when planted in the temple courts? Revelation 22:1 explains: “The river of the water of life flows from the throne of God,” found in His heavenly temple. Jesus further clarifies, saying, “Whoever believes in me, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” (John 7:38). This living water refers to the Holy Spirit, given to those who believe. The righteous, watered by God’s Spirit, flourish in the courts of the church, God’s earthly temple. Their green leaves bring healing to the nations (Revelation 22:2), and their fruit reflects the fruit of the Spirit. This is our purpose—to be fruitful and multiply, filling the earth with God’s image-bearers, bringing healing and love to the nations through the Spirit with which God nourishes us.
