The global mattress market is valued at over $30 billion dollars. That’s a lot of money invested in beds! Yet despite this huge investment, billions of additional dollars are spent on sleep medication. However, the average number of sleep hours has decreased by approx. 2 hours l since last century. And so, despite our comfy beds, we have less sleep. About 2800 years ago, the prophet Isaiah said, “For you have no place of refuge–the bed you have made is too short to lie on. The blankets are too narrow to cover you” (Isaiah 28:20). It’s not a comfy picture. It’s a visual warning about the inadequacy of our own attempts to find rest and peace. We rely on our wealth or position or resources to give us peace. Yet, despite all we have in our modern world, peace eludes us. Depression, anxiety, and despair are at all-time highs. Our solutions will always be a bed too short and a blanket too narrow. There is only one place we will find rest and peace in our tumultuous world – Jesus – “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
