“Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” (Mark 11:24). And “when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” (James 1:6). The Bible message is we must ask with confidence, and we will receive. Yet we are also told that God hears us “if we ask according to his will” (1 John 5:14-15). So how do we know if our request is according to God’s will? What if I truly believe, ask God, and he doesn’t grant my request? What should I do then? Hebrews 11, the chapter of faith, is filled with examples of faithful men and women. Yet, they didn’t receive what they hoped for. The chapter concludes, “These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.” (Hebrews 11:39-40). Our attitude should be the same as theirs. Believe we will receive what we have asked for. If we receive, rejoice. If we don’t receive, rejoice knowing it’s because “God has planned something better for us”. And then, in faith, believe and wait for that. Whatever it is you ask God for, whether you receive it or not, know he ultimately has something better for you – far better (Revelation 21:1-4).
