When I run I usually wear my AirPods so I can either listen to music or a podcast to distract me from the exercise I’m putting myself through. The other day I woke up really early for a run as I was staying on a farm and as I went outside, I decided to leave my headset at home so I could take in the scenery more. During the run I learned that natural distractions are much better, as I hardly noticed I was exercising after seeing all the animals I went past and hearing all the birds singing above me. It felt far more beneficial immersing myself in God’s creation than listening to content made by man. The feeling I experienced can be described by Psalm 104:24 which states, “How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.” Too often we look elsewhere for something interesting, when a lot of the time God has the distractions we are looking for waiting right outside. We should give Him praise for all the amazing works He’s left us and not take it for granted as I once did. In the future I’ll definitely be leaving the AirPods at home more.
