For those who have experienced a loved one suffering from dementia, you know how trying it is. The person faces constant confusion, but it can be even more difficult for the spouse caring for them. Watching my mother-in-law devotedly care for her husband has been astounding. With incredible patience, she answers the same question hundreds of times a day, always with love and patience, never showing frustration. I am in awe of her patience, born from over 60 years of love. It’s a God-given love—“Love is patient and kind” (1 Corinthians 13:4). It gave me a glimpse into the patience and love of God. Despite our endless sins, our endless lack of faith, our endless questions of doubt, he continues to answer us with the same love —not just for one person, but for billions over time. That is truly divine love. “The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning” (Lamentations 3:22-23).
