We were recently blessed to spend a week in the Kruger National Park. On any safari, the most sought after experience is a cat sighting. And so we studied the maps, plotted the best routes, rose at dawn, and drove to dusk, all in search of illusive felines. However, our efforts were to no avail. As we drove to the next camp, we put our windows up, placed our binoculars down and trundled along. About an hour later, we were gifted the most spectacular sighting – perfectly poised in a tree next to the road was a leopard with a warthog in its mouth. As we drove away, I reflected on the past few days and how aptly they taught the lesson of grace versus works. All our human efforts could not unlock the magical sighting, but once we accepted our weakness, we were granted the most spectacular sighting. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9). God’s ultimate gift of eternal life and freedom through Christ is not granted through our efforts but through His abundant mercy and riches. Do not try and find salvation in your efforts; instead, humbly accept the gift made possible through our Lord Jesus Christ and experience the most spectacular life possible.
