Diversity in the garden

Standing in the centre of a Fynbos garden, I was immediately struck by the intricate detail and diversity that surrounded me. At each individual level of a plant, you can zoom in on each leaf, flower, stem, and stamen. The depth of beauty at every layer is incredible. Then, collectively, the biodiversity of Fynbos is remarkable – so many unique species together in the garden, without one dominating, yet each showcasing its beauty in different ways and at different times. This diverse harmony is how I picture the Church, consisting of many individually beautiful members, forming a collectively diverse but unified body, with each contributing according to his own talents at the ordained time. “In Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us” (Romans 12:5-6).  So let us not envy the gifts of others or fight to stand out, but instead find peace in the gifts we have been given and use those gifts to glorify God on earth, as we wait for His Kingdom to be restored.
