There is something incredible about how a walk in nature can soothe the soul. Have you ever noticed how, when life feels as though it is falling apart, simply being immersed in God's creation can fill you with peace? Perhaps it is because, when we step into nature, we are reminded of the One who created it. David writes, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands" (Psalm 19:1). Creation exists in harmony with its Creator – the changing seasons, the rhythm of the waves, the birdsong and the beauty of a sunrise all point beyond themselves to God, glimpses of His wonder, peace and perfection. Perhaps this is also why we feel so unsettled when our own lives are out of harmony with God, experiencing emptiness, anxiety and a longing for something deeper. But God does not simply invite us to observe His handiwork; He desires to make us His dwelling place. "Your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit who is in you, … you are not your own" (1 Corinthians 6:19). When we surrender our lives to God we become His handiwork, "created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do" (Ephesians 2:10). The peace we discover in creation can become the peace we carry within when our lives are surrendered to its Creator – a beautiful reflection of what He longs our lives to be. (Nicky B).
