“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep” (Genesis 1:1-2). It’s the opening scene of the story of creation in the Bible. It is a scene of darkness, but life and light are coming. Today is the opening scene of the story of the new creation, a scene of great darkness. “It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.” (Luke 23:44-45). Jesus, the light of the world, is extinguished, and great darkness envelops the earth. He has achieved the greatest task ever, living a sinless life. He has shown the greatest love possible, dying to demonstrate how far he and his Father are prepared to go to show their love for us. “Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5v7-8). It is a scene of darkness, but life and light are coming.
