There is a Bible story about Lot having to escape the destruction that God would bring on Sodom. Lot’s wife was turned to a pillar of salt and the city and some of his family were destroyed by fire. Yet how did Lot, who set out with Abraham his uncle, end up here? “Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom” (Genesis 13:12). It’s just two words, but they would lead to the catastrophic events in Lot’s life – “near Sodom.” He didn’t, at first, live in this evil city, he just camped near it. At times in our lives we may decide to camp near Sodom. It’s just a fun text message to a married co-worker. It’s just a drink or two after work. It’s just skipping church this week. “Can a man scoop a flame into his lap and not have his clothes catch on fire?” (Proverbs 6:27). The safest place for a believer is not near the edge of temptation but close to the Lord. Lot’s story warns us that compromise always costs more than we think. He lost his wife, his influence, and his peace. But Abraham, who remained faithful, became the friend of God and the father of nations. Today, choose to stay close to God.
