The roof that lasts

The roof that lasts

While travelling through Europe, I’ve seen many beautiful old stone houses—solid walls built centuries ago. But though their walls still stand, many have sagging, leaking roofs. Even slate tiles can be blown off or fail under time’s weight. The result? Ruin from above, not weakness below. Solomon observed, “Through laziness, the rafters sag; because of idle hands, the house leaks” (Ecclesiastes 10:18). And it made me reflect—how often do we focus on building strong spiritual “walls” through prayer, sacrifice, God’s Word, and fellowship (Acts 2:42), yet neglect the roof? Even the best structures crumble without a covering. Our foundation must be Jesus (1 Corinthians 3:11), but above our walls we need the divine covering of God’s Spirit. “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1). The Spirit of God is the only roof that never fails. Build your walls on Jesus, and then have faith in God to provide his covering care in your life.
