Caught in the current

Caught in the current

One of the scariest things that can happen when swimming in the sea is getting caught in a rip current—a powerful stream that pulls you away from shore. The instinct is to fight it, to swim hard toward land. But doing so only exhausts you and gets you nowhere. Lifesaving advice posted on beaches warns: don’t fight the current. Let it take you out, then swim across it, and you’ll find a returning current that gently brings you back to shore. In life, we often act like those panicked swimmers—fighting against God’s direction, exhausting ourselves with our own plans. Before his conversion, the apostle Paul was doing just that. Jesus told him, “It is useless for you to fight against my will” (Acts 26:14). We do the same when we resist God’s leading out of fear or stubbornness. But His will, though it may feel uncertain, is always good. Instead of swimming against Him, let yourself be carried by His current. “Seek God’s will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take” (Proverbs 3:6). He knows the way to shore.
