Empty homes

Empty homes

I’m often struck by the number of beautiful homes with stunning sea views that are empty. Most owners only spend a few weeks in them, leaving them empty the rest of the year. It feels like a metaphor for their lives. Life isn’t about the possessions we have but the time we possess. These wealthy people own incredible homes but don’t have the time to live in them. Jesus warned us: “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own” (Luke 12:15). He tells a story about a rich man who builds more and more with his wealth, hoping to one day enjoy it. “‘And I’ll sit back and say to myself, ‘My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now, take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!’” (v19). But it’s time, not money, that is precious. God says to him, “‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’” (v20). The lesson is clear: “A person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God” (v21). What are you chasing—empty mansions or a full life? Jesus said, “I have come that you might have life and have it to the full” (John 10:10).
