Recently, our small dog needed an operation to remove some of her teeth. On her return, she must have had a lot of discomfort and pain. Yet besides slightly less bounce, she showed no other signs of what she was feeling. It made me think about how remarkable animals are in their suffering. They don’t complain or tell everyone about it. They simply endure it and make the most of life. It’s amazing when you consider how quickly we, as humans, are to complain. The wait in traffic is too long. The food is cold. The weather is too hot. We are warned that this will be a sign of people living in the last days – “These people are grumblers and complainers, living only to satisfy their desires” (Jude 1:16). However, in contrast to this, we have Jesus – the most loving, guiltless person – condemned to die. And as the prophet Isaiah foretold – “He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth” (Isaiah 53:7). Jesus – silent in his suffering, outspoken in his care for others. Can we be more like Jesus?
