One of the most common phrases in our modern Zoom world is, “You’re on mute.” Someone is speaking, lips moving, but no one hears a thing because their mic is off. I fear we may often experience the spiritual equivalent. Our hearts are full of thoughts, gratitude, intentions, but our mouths stay silent. “I should tell John how much I appreciate him,” or “I must call Edna to see how she is.” But these remain unspoken ideas that never become words or actions. Yet our words carry power. From the very beginning, God spoke creation into being. Jesus is described as the Word made flesh (John 1:14) – the living, breathing embodiment of God’s message. So how can we unmute ourselves? How can our words today bring life, not harm? Encouragement, not silence? Scripture says, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver” (Proverbs 25:11). Let’s not stay muted. Speak life. Speak love. Speak hope.
