I’ve often looked at the 12 disciples with awe, and maybe a little envy. Imagine being personally chosen by Jesus, living with Him daily, sitting by the fire listening to His teachings. Who wouldn’t want to be part of that? But Jesus gave a clear warning: “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves… When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another… Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.” (Matthew 10:16–28). The honour of being chosen came with a heavy cost. According to tradition, of the 11 who remained faithful, 10 were killed. Only John, exiled to Patmos, died naturally. These were Jesus’ closest friends, and nearly all paid the ultimate price. We too are called to be His disciples. While we may not be asked to give our lives, Jesus still says, “Take up your cross daily and follow Me.” (Luke 9:23). This is not a call to seek suffering, but a call to surrender. It is in the daily laying down of our preferences, our control, and our self-preservation that we get to sit with the master and hear his stories and lessons for life.
