There’s a crazy story in the book of Judges where Gideon is leading a small army against a far larger enemy. However, God keeps telling him to reduce the size of his army from 32,000 until it is just 300 soldiers. And with this he must face an enemy of 135,000. This seems illogical, as surely he should be recruiting more soldiers to improve their odds of success. But God says to Gideon, “You have too many warriors with you. If I let all of you fight the Midianites, the Israelites will boast to me that they saved themselves by their own strength” (Judges 7:2). How true is this in our lives? When we face problems, what is our first solution? Is it to rely on our strength—our intellect, finances, and resources? Sometimes in life God might leave us with no resources of our own to deal with an impossible problem. It’s then that we, in faith, will see that the victory is not in our strength but in the power of God. But what’s even more powerful is when, in faith, we choose to give up our reliance on our strength and trust God. Then, in awe, we will witness His awesome power.
