Recently, I listened to a podcast on factors impacting life expectancy. While exercise and healthy eating are essential, they found the two most significant factors to be positive relationships and positive thoughts. While scientists are just discovering this, two thousand years ago, the Bible said – “Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together” (Hebrews 10:24). Positive community and relationships are essential to both our spiritual and physical well-being. And then we read in Philippians 4:8 – “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” These are the ultimate positive thoughts. Focusing on God and his Word, rather than the bad news of the world, will not only develop your spiritual health, it will extend your life. For a long life, follow what the first Christians did – “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching (positive thoughts) and to fellowship (positive relationships), to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” (Acts 2:42).
