Perfect People

Perfect People

If you get to know me, you’ll soon realise I’m a perfectionist. My Dad learned this early on during my dinosaur phase as a child. Every day, I would demand a drawing of a new dinosaur. And not just any drawing, a perfect drawing that matched the image in the book. Now, my father is many things, but he is not an artist, so more often than not, I was left frustrated when the drawing did not match the perfection I envisioned. I still get annoyed as I try to perfect things in my life, and my wife will just say, “The dinosaur”, reminding me of my childhood. Time and time again, I aim for perfection but ‘miss the mark’. Which is the Hebrew definition of ‘sin’. I keep falling short, but I know Jesus says, “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48), so how can this be? We are called to perfection, but not through our own strength. No matter how hard we try, we will not find perfection in this world, but we can rest in our pursuit of perfection, knowing that “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
