“What day is it?” asked Pooh. “It’s today,” squeaked Piglet. “My favourite day,” said Pooh. This quote from Winnie the Pooh makes a profound point. We often live in the past or dream of the future. And yes, remembering matters – “Consider those things written aforetime, (that) were written for our learning” (Romans 15:4). And so does hoping – “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). The past gives us context. The future gives us direction. But only the present gives us opportunity. We can’t rewrite yesterday, and tomorrow is a mystery. Today is our only moment to act. That’s why it’s called the present – it’s a gift. So we’re told, “Encourage one another daily, as long as it is called ‘Today’” (Hebrews 3:13). What will you do with the gift of today?
