Come

Come

“Come” was the invitation from the small church in a distant country. In faith, they packed their home, put it up for sale, and waited. A week before the removal truck was due, a storm washed away the access bridge leaving only a tricky gravel track. They delayed the truck. However, warnings of a bigger storm were issued. The bridge wouldn’t be fixed in time. The gravel track would be impassable in the rain. The house wasn’t sold. Delays meant the move wouldn’t happen. With just days remaining, in terror and faith, they said, “Come”. The truck set out. It rained. It got delayed. No buyers came. Faith and fear mingled. Dawn. The truck set out. Then the sun burst through. Then the truck arrived on dry forest tracks. Then a buyer came, and the house was sold. And then, joyfully, they knew, “We are coming”. In life, we will get invitations from God. Invitations that take courage and seem impossible. Like Peter, who saw Jesus walking on water in a storm. “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus” (Matthew 14:27-29). But the story doesn’t end there. The waves don’t go when we answer the call. Peter sinks, he cries out, and “Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him” (v31). When you heed God’s call, even though the waves look tall, even if fears grows, go in faith, he will save you, he will bring you to the end. “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid…Come” (v27).
