Searching for birds

Searching for birds

Wow, look up above. Where? There, it’s a Pel’s Fishing Owl. After much frantic searching with the binoculars, the bird is found. There’s great excitement. This is one of those lifers (bird speak for the first time you see it) that is rare. While many might think it crazy to see birders getting their feathers all in a fluff because they spotted some bird, most of us experience this feeling at some stage. It’s the feeling associated with finding something rare. There’s a burst of excitement, joy, wonder, awe. Jesus tells a micro parable about this. “The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.” (Matthew 13:45-46). It’s one thing to get excited about finding a rare bird, but this story is about finding something much more valuable. We can spend our life searching for answers – pearls of wisdom, and still not find joy, peace and love. And then, one day, with hearts open, we find Jesus, and we are filled with excitement, joy, wonder, and awe. Not only have we found the greatest pearl of wisdom for daily life, we have found the secret to eternal life. Wow. Look up above. Find Jesus. Discover the ultimate lifer.
