“Pass me the salt.” “Please put that box upstairs.” “Drive to this address.” All of these are simple everyday instructions, yet have you considered what is actually happening? Without you physically moving or touching anything or anyone, physical items – salt, box, car, person – are moving from one place to another. That’s the power of words. Words can create plans that bring about activity and results. With God, the power of words is at another level. The Bible has the most unique opening scene. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” (Genesis 1:1-3). And so begins the record of God creating everything with just words. Words are power. A power to create, but also a power to destroy. Our words can talk light and life into people or darkness and death. It’s for this reason that Jesus says, “You must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak.” (Matthew 12:36). All you say is creative. A power to create good or bad, life or death.
