We had the privilege of staying with friends who have sheep on their small farm. The sheep were securely kept in a field where they happily spent their time grazing. However, one day as we were about to go out we noticed a few sheep had escaped somehow. And while trying to coax them in, a lot more ran out. Soon there were sheep running in all directions. The solution to get them back was to use a bucket of food that they loved. Soon a few began following and then more, until eventually they were all safely back in their field. I feel like we are often like these lost sheep. God gave us His laws for our safekeeping. “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go” (Isaiah 48:17–18). Yet we break out, and soon are running “free” unaware that now we are in danger. But God is the good shepherd and He will lead us safely back to safety. If you feel lost, or life is not working out as you thought, let the psalmist’s prayer be yours: “I have wandered away like a lost sheep; come and find me, for I have not forgotten your commands” (Psalm 119:176).
