Look Here, Not There

We may be the first generation in history to look at ourselves this much. Mirrors. Cameras. Selfies. Social media. We constantly see our own reflection alongside thousands of carefully curated images of everyone else. That creates a strange paradox: we have never looked at ourselves more, yet perhaps never seen ourselves less clearly. The problem with a mirror is simple – if it is distorted, it gives you a distorted picture. And many mirrors we use to understand ourselves are distorted, telling us what beauty, success, and identity should look like. Scripture offers another mirror. James says someone who hears God's Word but ignores it is "like someone who looks at his face in a mirror" and then forgets what he looks like. (James 1:23-24) God's Word shows something our other mirrors cannot. "People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7) The Bible doesn't merely show the face – it reveals the person behind it. And remarkably, God's mirror doesn't just reveal us; it changes us. As we look towards Him, Paul says we are "being transformed into his image." (2 Corinthians 3:18) So tomorrow, before checking your reflection, your photos, or your feed, try another mirror.
