Getting personal

Our food comes cellophane wrapped and neatly packaged in supermarkets. It’s a far cry from what these items actually look like. We can easily lose touch with what things actually are. The same applies to our human condition. We perceive ourselves as cellophane wrapped and neatly packaged through social media’s shelves. Hearts and Likes. Clean and good. However, is this what we truly are? Is this how God sees us? He says, “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Interestingly, the word “sin” is used so seldom, that if I type it on my phone, it autocorrects to “sun”.  This is an insight into our modern mindset, as who talks about sin anymore? We are far removed from our real condition before God. Under Jewish law, they had to acknowledge their sin by taking an animal and “Lay your hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on your behalf to make atonement for you.” (Leviticus 1:4). They had to touch the innocent animal as it died knowing it was in place of them. That made sin personal. That made sin real. Jesus has taken your sin on him. Yet we, too, must acknowledge our sin and associate with him and the ultimate price he paid. In this, we will receive his real wrapping of righteousness (Romans 13:14).
