Nothing is nicer than sitting beside a warm fire on a cold winter’s night, watching the flames dance and flicker. However, you quickly learn something while scouring the countryside for wood to burn. A green, moist branch covered with leaves just won’t burn. It’s the dry, withered branches that have dropped off the trees that you want. There is an important spiritual lesson here. Jesus tells us, “If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.” (John 15:6). This is a picture of our life without Christ. The discarded branch is withered and ultimately burnt by the sin and evils of this world. However, as Jesus says – “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” (John 15:7). So, if we connect to Jesus, our branches will not whither; instead they will produce much fruit (v8). Connected to Jesus, the world and its evils cannot harm or destroy us. We are filled with the living water of Jesus and our life is filled with his fruit. So, the next time you reach for a dry log to throw into the fire, think of the words of Jesus. See that log about to be consumed by the fire as a picture of life without Christ. Remain in Jesus, for he has a life prepared for you abundantly more than you can think or imagine.
