It’s a postcard scene. The heavens bursting with colour as the sun sets over the distant mountains beyond the rows of vines. Springtime means the vines are awakening from their winter nap as new leaves appear. However it’s not the sunset or the vines that grab our attention – but the soil. The soil is so dry and rocky that not even weeds can grow there. Yet, some of the finest wines in the world are produced from the grapes which come out of this very soil. Winemakers know that the more the vines struggle, the sweeter and more intense the flavour of the grapes. However, in addition to the lesson that in our weakness and struggles God’s goodness is revealed (2 Corinthians 12:9) there is another important lesson to be learned. As we look at the vines, all huddled together we are reminded of the fellowship we share in Jesus. All holding onto each other. All given equal space to grow. All nurtured. All cared for. All belonging. All abiding in the true vine and therefore, all producing good fruit. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). Join the vine and produce the best fruit in the world.
