Our dogs have a strange routine with their food. We put the pellets out and neither of them will go and eat them. At some stage the one will go and lie near them, guarding them from the other one. Access is barred. Even if she decides to eat some, she will after finishing still lie and protect the food. There is no thought of sharing. As cute as they are, they are controlled by their animal instincts. Humans were created on the same day as the animals, and we too are by default controlled by our animal instincts. My survival. My needs. My desires. However, God said something important in his first command to humans—“Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over…every living creature” (Genesis 1:28). While it’s natural, like animals, to be fruitful and multiply and look to our own wants, we are called to rule over animals. We need to subdue our natural me-first desires and replace them with the divine calling to love God and love your neighbour (Matthew 22:36–40). Today, we all have a choice. Will what I do be for me or for others? Will it be what I want or what others need? In God’s power we can truly be fruitful and multiply to others.
